Kaiser Permanente is a nonprofit integrated health care organization based in Oakland, California with medical insurance plans available in numerous regions across the United States. The segmented regions include Kaiser Permanente California, Kaiser Permanente Colorado, Kaiser Permanente Georgia, Kaiser Hawaii, Kaiser Maryland/Virginia/Washington DC, Kaiser Ohio and Kaiser Oregon/Washington. The organization was founded in 1945 by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and physician Sidney R. Garfield, and has continued to grow and thrive since then.
Three distinct entities make up Kaiser Permanente - the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc., Permanente Medical Groups and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. All of the segmented regional operating organizations such as Kaiser Permanente California are part of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan. As the largest managed care organization in the United States, there are millions of members and thousands of employees, physicians, medical centers and medical offices included in the Kaiser Permanente network. This size and scope allows Kaiser to remain on the cutting edge of medical technology. The organization is also known as the industry leader in the integration to electronic medical records with the introduction of My Health Manager.
Annual operating revenues in the billions and a net income of $1.3 billion allow this nonprofit health care organization to continue supporting the communities it serves, promoting health programs and serving the greater good with various grants and initiatives. The Health Plan and its regional organizations such as Kaiser Permanente Colorado and Kaiser Permanente Georgia operate under the state and federal not-for-profit tax status, along with all the hospitals. The Medical Groups, on the other hand, operate under professional corporations and for-profit partnerships in their individual regions.
Although Kaiser Permanente is not available in all 50 states, the organization remains the largest managed health care provider in the United States. It was also a pioneer in the health insurance industry when the idea of affordable medical care for all was pretty much unheard of.
