Whatever angle you look at it, flood damage is a big problem. Aside from the huge sum of money that you are going to shell out in the event of flood damage, you also have to deal with the whole cleaning up, disinfecting, and drying up process, not to mention starting your life anew if you are forced to move into a different location.

Therefore, it is very important for you to avoid damage by floods before it even starts. Here is a checklist that will guide you in ensuring that you are ready for any type of flood damage:

* Know your flood risk. You can do this by contacting your local Red Cross chapter. This is an important step so that you can assess the extent of your flood preparations. If you live in a flood risk area, you need to employ measures against flood damage. If you are in a low-risk area, good for you, but be ready all the same.

* Prepare your flood insurance. Let us assume that you have equipped your house with all the equipment against flood damage that you can think of. They are definitely useful, but not as much as flood insurance. Your flood insurance will deflect the cost of the damages caused by the flood. You need to have flood insurance even if you do not live in a flood-risk area, since the homeowners policy does not cover flood damage.

* Assess the location of your electric panel board. You have to make sure that the height of your panel board is at least 12 inches above the expected flood level in your house. This is to avoid any untoward incidents, like electric shocks and fires. This also goes the same for switches, outlets, sockets, and haters.

* Assess the height of your other appliances. For example, the dishwasher and dryer must be elevated also at least 12 inches or 1 foot above the projected flood elevation. You can also opt to move these appliances to higher floors. Building a floodwall to protect these items from flood damage is also advisable.

* Check the fuel tank. You have to make sure that the fuel tank is anchored securely, since this can cause a fuel spill in the flood, leading to a conflagration. Also, if ever your house gets plagued by flood damage, the cleaning process would be more difficult because of the fuel spill.

* Check the sewage system. It is advisable to install a backflow valve in your sewer system so that sewage back ups will not occur and enter your home, causing flood damage. Moreover, water coming from the sewer system is contaminated, so you can just imagine the diseases that you can get from the floodwaters. Therefore, a backflow valve must be installed by a plumber.

The things stated above are just some of the ways in avoiding and dealing with flood damage. There are still other options, such as building drainage systems, levees, floodwalls, and house improvement.
