Before you know it winter will be upon us again and many places have already heard the disturbing news that many electric companies will be once again raising their rates. We have already seen this happen with gas companies who furnish heat for homes in the cold weather months. It remains to be seen how much it will cost the average family to heat their homes this cold season. We have no choice but to pay these bills when the temperature is freezing or below outside.

For those who have them, fireplaces are once again becoming a good way to stay warm in the winter. For many years the fireplace had become nothing more than a show piece in the home that could be lit to give a cozy feeling to a home, but it might not have been necessary to keep warm. That is all changing now for those who have access to the wood to burn in them. When you live in certain areas where wood is plentiful, it might be cheaper in the long run to use a fireplace to supplement the heat in a home.

Whenever people have a living fire in their home they are always running the risk that it might get out of control and this can be devastating. There are plenty of fire place safety rules that should be followed in order to make sure an uncontrolled fire does not occur. When you use a fireplace all during the cold season, people can get a little careless without really meaning to. It will only take once for them to realize this was a mistake.

Making sure your fireplace flue is clean each season before you begin using it one way to prevent an uncontrolled fire. Fireplaces can catch on fire all up inside the flue and actually cause flames to be coming out of the top of your chimney. This causes many house fires each year. Sometimes a fire in the flue will burn itself out and there might not be any damage, but when there is enough residue built up inside there, it can start of fire on any combustible surface it gets close enough too. The main way to avoid this is by having your chimney swept after you stop using it in the spring or before you start using it.

No one should have to be told to keep flammable objects well away from the fireplace. Fabric, paper, furniture, toys, anything that can get hot and catch on fire should be kept a good distance away. Use a fireplace screen or doors to prevent sparks from igniting something that may be close by. Using common sense is usually the best way to prevent unnecessary fires in your home.
