Chakras are energy centres in the body. There are seven major chakras located in the body. Each one has special attributes that help the body use energy most effectively.

The Root Chakra is associated with the colour red and the earth. It is located at the base of the spine in the tailbone. This energy centre helps us to be grounded and connect to the physical plane. Imbalances in this chakra are indicated by anaemia, fatigue, depression, sciatica and lower back pain. You may also suffer from frequent colds or feel cold in your feet and hands.

Red stimulates this chakra, so you can eat and drink red foods and beverages, wear red clothing and use red essential oils like ylang ylang. The lesson of this root chakra is security and survival. It helps you deal with the physical world and material things.

The Sacral Chakra is located between the reproductive organs and the belly button. It is associated with the colour orange and the element of water. It is connected with sexuality, creativity and the emotions. An imbalanced sacral chakra may present itself in an eating disorder, or by abusing alcohol or drugs. Depression is common. Asthma and allergies may manifest, or you may be plagued by yeast infections and urinary problems.

This chakra is stimulated by baths, massage and all things orange.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is located between the sternum and the abdomen. It is associated with the colour yellow and the element of fire. This chakra governs the balance of intellect, ego and self confidence. An imbalanced solar plexus will manifest as diabetes, digestive issues, nervousness, and poor memory.

Stimulate this chakra by detoxing, sitting in the sun, doing intellectual games and all things yellow.

The Heart Chakra is located in the centre of the chest and is associated with the colour green or pink. It represents the element of air. It governs love, compassion and acceptance. Imbalances may appear as heart or breathing problems, cancer of the breast or heart, high blood pressure and muscle tension.

Stimulate the heart chakra by taking walks, spending time with loved ones and all things green.

The Throat Chakra is located at the base of the throat and is associated with sky blue. It teaches you how to express yourself and your beliefs. It also helps you trust. Imbalances may manifest in thyroid problems, swollen glands, flu, fever, infections and problems of the mouth, jaw, tongue and neck. Hormonal problems like PMS may also be related to the throat chakra.

Stimulate this chakra by singing, or pursuing poetry or art. Blue is helpful in all forms.

The Brow Chakra is located above the eyes in the centre of the forehead. Its colour is indigo. This chakra shows you how to use your intuition and how to release repressed thoughts. Imbalances may show themselves as sleep disorders and learning disabilities.

Stimulate this chakra by star gazing, meditation and choosing things that are indigo coloured.

The Crown Chakra is located at the top of your head and is associated with the colour violet. This chakra offers pure awareness and connection to universe. Imbalances may appear as headaches, mental illness or sensitivity to light.
Stimulate the crown chakra by studying your dreams and surrounding yourself with violet.
