Talismans are objects that are imbued with energy or magical powers. It can be a special object that is made especially for protection, prosperity, to secure love or other purpose, or it can be an everyday object that has been prepared especially for someone to serve a purpose. Most talismans are made for protection. They work best when they are carried constantly by the person they were made for. Talismans were made from precious stones inscribed with symbols like runes or were as simple as cloves of garlic to protect a person from vampires.
Many talismans are made with astrological, magical or religious symbols on them. They are made using ritual, special ingredients and at certain times to make it as powerful as possible. For example, for a prosperity talisman, you may need a gold candle, specific essential oils and crystals associated with attracting money, and you may need to perform the ritual during the time of the waxing moon. An example of a talisman that became part of our own culture is the lucky rabbit s foot. In ancient Africa, carrying the foot of a swift animal was supposed to help the person carrying it to escape with the speed of the animal who supplied the talisman. When this tradition was carried to America with African slaves, it was assimilated to become a rabbit s foot.
Today, anything can become a talisman, whether it is a lucky shirt or a religious medal for a specific patron saint. If you feel that a certain object helps you succeed at something, it becomes imbued with your belief. Some traditional talismans include found coins for good luck, eggs as a fertility charm, a fish made from any type of material is supposed to bring a large family and a horseshoe is good luck. Many talismans today are made in the form of jewellery, since it is easily worn every day.
Whatever your talisman is, its purpose is to empower you to make transformations that you feel cannot be made without its help, whether it is to attract more prosperity into your life or to add protection from real or imagined dangers. Usually, after a person has made this transformation within themselves, they no longer need the talisman.
If you have a talisman, it will be most effective if you carry it with you at all times. It is constantly bathed in your energies this way, and with the beliefs you hold about it. Soldiers may carry something special from home or a religious medal for safety. This same method works for anyone. Many people will wear a crucifix or a Star of David not only to reflect their religious affiliation, but to invoke protection from God. They may not call it a talisman, but it is used as one all the same. Athletes may also use talismans to help them win. This is no different from wearing you re lucky underwear when you need to make a presentation or are going to the casino. Belief in your talisman is what is most important.
