I think most of us will agree that the human body was not designed for a sedentary lifestyle where our bodies spend the vast majority of time in a non active state, while at the same time eating modern day chemical mixtures called processed food. No, our bodies were created to live a rugged, active, lifestyle while eating moderate amounts of natural foods.
Though we may not live a rugged lifestyle, we most assuredly live a hurried lifestyle. When it comes to developing a lean, fit, muscular body many people don t believe they have the time, motivation, or discipline to exercise on a regular basis. Many of these same people however will rationalize that they can lose the weight by way of dieting alone.
There are many diet programs that even make this part of their advertising campaign, telling you that you can lose the weight without any streneous exercise. Many people will buy into this idea as a simple way to lose weight. Just buy their pre packaged diet food, eat it, and you will lose the weight, right?
While I am sure that a percentage of people will succeed strictly by dieting, I believe most are simply setting themsevles up for failure. Here s why. The first thing is, I believe you are mentally telling yourself that you would like to lose the weight, if you don t really have to try that hard, if the food taste good, and as long as you have the money to buy their expensive diet food. You have essentially told yourself that it is ok to fail, and your weight loss commitment was not a serious one in my humble opinion.
However, there is a more sinister reason why I strongly believe any diet must be coupled with a workout or exercise routine. There is scientific evidence that your body has a body fat set point , and that your body will stubbornly resist any attempts to change your current level of body fat. This is a very complex process your body and brain are involved in, that I believe is probably the number one reason most people who try to lose weight strictly by dieting, fail.
Evidence does suggest that you can change your body fat set point by dieting alone, but it is more difficult. Most people will give up on their diet when after two to three weeks the scales says they have only lost 1 or 2 lbs. You are going to have to be very tough mentally to break through that body fat set point, by dieting alone.
On the other hand, there is research that suggest the best way to change the body fat set point is through exercise, and more specifically through resistance exercises, I.E. weight lifting. Now I know most of you ladies don t want to look like a female body builder, but that is not necessary in order to get the awesome benefits of hitting the weights for even a few minutes a day.
One last note of caution. Most people who decide to implement a new exercise regimen will join a gym, or take up running, etc. Very often they will become sidetracked, due to lack of time, and miss a few runs or miss their trip to the gym. When this happens their entire exercise plan comes crashing down, along with their diet commitment, and they end up back at square one.
It is my strong belief that the simplest workout habit to create is one based on doing a small handful of exercises, at home, each and every day of your life. The winner of the fitness game will be the person who is still knocking out a handful of exercises each and every day, three and five years from now. Awesome!
