When disaster strikes in a home, it can really turn a family upside down. You can lose each other, your belongings, and even the entire home in some cases. Two of the most common reasons for damage to a home is fires and floods. Mother Nature fires and floods can be unavoidable and nothing can be done to prevent these, but fires and floods caused by you or the home itself many times can be avoided.

Home inspection is the key to preventing things that can easily turn into big disasters if they are ignored. By simply doing occasional inspections to vital areas, you can stop a problem before it actually becomes one. Doing the repairs to anything you find that needs it promptly, will mean you are avoiding the time, trouble, and added expense of fixing something on a larger scale later.

Plumbing breaks causes the majority of home floods anyway. Keeping your plumbing in good condition is not that difficult when you know what is going on all the time. When you do your plumbing inspections, you should do any repairs that are needed immediately. Small leaks means that water is escaping and you never know when the pressure from the water will cause the whole thing to come apart and this is when you can get a flood.

Watching for sewer problems is essential too so anytime you can smell sewage there is a problem somewhere. If you find spots in your yard that are staying wet and are smelly for no obvious reason, it is obviously the sewer line. When you have a toilet, sink, or bathtub that is constantly backing up, you have a clog or residue build up that is causing it more than likely. It might not cause sewage back up, but you will not know for sure unless it happens. Slow drains and clogs need to be remedied, especially if they involve a toilet.

Fire safety is essential for a home. Simple things can prevent fires usually. Take special care if you use a fire place. Keep your flues clean if you burn wood and have regular inspections for a gas burning unit. Do not put flammable items near the fire place like rugs or furniture that is too close.

Keep a check on any electrical cords. If they are frayed or brittle, replace them. If you have flickering lights or this happens when you turn on certain things in the home, you should have an electrician check it right away. Old electrical wiring can be very hazardous. Do not use damaged outlets. Never remove the third prong on a plug to fit it into a two holed receptacle. These kinds of plugs have three prongs for a reason, so they will get the proper amount of current.
