Summer has come and it seems like it has just flown by. Soon the autumn season will be here with the leaves turning to golden hues and we will have to begin making preparations for wintertime once again. We always anticipate that first cold breeze and a snow fall to follow. At least those of us who live in climates where we have a lot of frozen precipitation in the cold months do anyway.

If you live in a cold climate where there is a good deal of freezing rain and snowfall, you know that there are a lot of things that need to be taken care of before the season ever starts. Buying salt for our driveway and walkways and making sure the tires on our car are in good shape as well as having chains to put on them if the weather requires it. Waiting until the last minute to make the house ready can be a mistake. Once the cold weather arrives, no one wants to have to be underneath the house or outside doing things that should have been taken care of already.

Freezing water pipes in the home during the winter can spell disaster for a homeowner unless he ensures the pipes are protected. This means they should be insulated with heat tape or other protective coverings. If the water in exposed pipes freeze, like those in the crawlspace or an unheated basement, the problem only really takes place when they thaw out. When the water in pipes freeze solid, the frozen water expands and many times this will cause the pipes to burst open especially where they are joined together.

The pipes are fine as long as they are frozen, except for the fact that you have no water flowing through it, but when it thaws, boy can it be a mess. Sometimes you will not even know a pipe has burst until the thawed water starts flooding somewhere. If you are lucky, if you can call it lucky, the busted pipe will be outside, but many times it can be inside underneath a cabinet. This is when it can cause a room to flood. No one wants to have to deal with this situation in the cold weather.

To avoid any of these frozen pipe issues, take the time during the warm weather to take the necessary precautions. As the cold weather approaches, you might want to unhook garden hoses from the outside spigots and wrap the spigots and pipes to keep them from freezing too. Make sure all of your plumbing is in good condition and protected well against freezing both inside and outside the house. This will help to reduce the risk of having to call a plumber and pay an expensive emergency repair bill in the freezing cold.
