No one wants to have to think about what will happen if you and your family suddenly had to deal with a flash flood warning. Would you be prepared? Would you even know where to start or would you have a disaster kit already complied and ready to leave your home at a moments notice? When you live in a flood zone, this is what you will need to do and what you will need to know in case flood warnings are issued.

The one thing you need to know for sure is the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning. A flood watch means that it is possible that a flood or flash flood can occur because conditions are right. A flash flood warning means that you could be in immediate danger and may have to evacuate immediately. Whenever the weather suggests that even a flood watch is possible, keep your television or a weather radio on continuously to stay informed of the latest information.

When you know that a flood watch has been issued in your area, now is the time to check and begin to your enact your disaster plan and check your supplies. You should already have these things stored in the home somewhere and they should include three gallons of water for each person, a first aid kit, canned food and an opener, protective clothing and bedding. Your emergency supplies should also include a battery operated radio, special items for the disabled or infants. You need to have written instructions for how to turn off gas, electricity, and water if authorities ask you to.

When a flood watch has been issued, this is the correct time to also make sure your vehicle has plenty of gas in case you have to flee suddenly. You should not have even waited until a flood watch to know where you and your family will go in case of evacuation. You should have at least three different places in mind in case you were not able to get to one or two of them. If you keep your disaster supplies ready at all times you will be prepared to leave instantly if you must.

Once you know there is a flood watch issued, pay close attention if you live in a flood zone because circumstances can change in an instant. Listen for the first flood warning and then find out if you need to evacuate immediately. If you are in doubt, do not wait. It is better to waste a little time taking steps that prove unnecessary than to wait and be trapped in your home with no way out.
