If you are an avid walleye angler and want to plan for some fall walleye fishing, you are in luck. Walleye are at their peek in the fall months. They are eating everything before the winter sets in and the water temperatures drop. It is a feeding frenzy for walleye. You should find the weed beds in the water. The weeds are starting to thin and the walleye are looking for the baitfish in these areas. You can easily drop a minnow right into the middle of the weed bed and hook the walleye. Keep in mind the day should be somewhat overcast. The walleye will frequent the thinning weed beds in low light because the baitfish cannot see them coming.

Fall months are also a good time to fish the rock humps. The humps will have baitfish hiding from predators in the deeper waters. The walleye will frequent the rock humps when traveling back and forth between the deep and shallow waters. The best places to fish walleye in fall are the simplest places. The bait is easy enough as well. You can use a jig with a minnow for some vertical fishing. If you have no minnows, you can use leeches or night crawlers. The jig should be heavy enough to keep the bait close to the bottom.

The walleye are bottom fish, so you will need to get as close to the bottom as you can. This is called the strike zone. Walleye that see something in their strike zone will strike their prey rather than having to chase it. Walleye are fast fish, but they are lazy when it comes to eating. They want the food delivered right to them. You can use the night crawlers and minnows in weed beds and the leeches by the rock humps.

In the fall months, the weather plays an important role in walleye fishing. During the day, in full light, you will want to go to the deeper waters. Walleye do not like light and will stay near the bottom when the sun is bright. On overcast days, the walleye will find shallow waters ideal. You should concentrate on lakes and rivers where walleye are being caught as well. It is also known that dark muddy waters and bright sun create a feeding frenzy for walleye. The light makes the water insects move around and the baitfish move around more.

If you have changing weather conditions during the day, you are going to need to change your approach on how you fish. If the weather is windy and overcast, then changes to bright sun and no wind, you will need to move to a different area. The bright conditions move fish into deeper water and the overcast skies send fish to the shallow waters. You might have to try a slow approach with bright conditions and a faster trolling speed when the sky is overcast. You have to fish according to the weather conditions in fall as well as other months.
